With the best location in town, locally owned On Top Backpackers & Apartments has something for every traveller! Reception is located on the ground floor which doubles as our very own vintage Poolhouse Bar & Café, available for all guests to enjoy throughout their stay. The hostel is a restricted R18 property up two flights of stairs across one level, with 24 hour key card accessibility and the latest security system. We have a variety of rooms ranging from 6-8 bed dorms, private ensuites to newly built furnished apartments. Every room selection offers fresh linen, heating, complimentary continental breakfast, and unlimited highspeed Wi-Fi. "Very well-organised, well-run place with a relaxed vibe that comes from having solid ground rules. Very close to the city centre, but in a quiet street. Everything worked."
"The bunk beds creak when the person above turns over. One of the (electrically-operated) skylights wouldn't open. This would be annoying on a hot night (even by Dunedin standards)."

"The location could not have been more central - a few minutes walk to the Octagon. We had one of the few double rooms with private bathroom at the back of the building. The room had a pleasant outlook & was surprisingly quiet. Free parking in the carpark next door was a bonus."
"The common lounge/dining/kitchen area was comfortable but inadequate for the number of people wanting to use it. We had food to cook but the queue was so long for the stoves we gave up & went to a restaurant."
